During over twenty years of work, they have become more than just a group that plays covers - a synonym for refined musical taste, unusual arrangements and breaking stereotypes. Their audience on all meridians is united by a preference for the refined in art, listening dedication and appreciation of good pop music, as well as openness to unusual combinations, like a punk hit in the Bosnian version!
Nouvelle Vague was founded in 2003 by musicians Olivier Libaux and Marc Collin. With their first album, the group gained cult status around the world, creating a specific niche with their repertoire - they perform stylized versions of famous tracks from the period of the "new wave" in rock music, as the name of their band suggests (Nouvelle Vague - new wave in French). The name of the band simultaneously refers to the French "new wave", the original film movement of the 1960s, as well as to the world music movement "new wave" of the 1970s and 1980s, to which many songs from their repertoire belong, often covered in "bossa nova" (new wave in Portuguese) arrangements. Unique female voices played an important role in the authentic stylization of the group. The group's recordings and live performances have included, apart from the founding members, from the beginning a large rotating cast of outstanding female vocalists, including: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer, Mélanie Pain, Nadéah Miranda, Gerald Toto, Helena Noguerra, Lisette Alea, Mareva Galanter, Jenia Lubich and Élodie Frégé. For several female artists, the band was a springboard for successful solo careers, and they often collaborated with famous musical guests.
After the album "Nouvelle Vague" (2004) which launched them as a new musical phenomenon, they confirmed their unique status with "Bande à part" (2006) and finally established it with "3" (2009) - all of which contain refined versions of famous songs by Joy Division, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Clash, Tuxedomoon, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Sisters of Mercy, Blondie, Buzzcocks, New Order and many others. "Couleurs sur Paris" (2010) brought covers of French compositions from the same milieu, followed by a break until the release of "I Could Be Happy" (2016), which followed the same pattern. Although one of the founders, Olivier Liebo, died in 2021, the group continued with concert activity, but they recorded a new release only last year.
With the album "Should I Stay or Should I Go" (2024), the Nouvelle Vague group pushes the boundaries again. This time, there are more songs that lean towards a pop sound, albeit with roots in the post-punk era: from "Rapture" by Blondie treated in the manner of a film noir theme and authentic arrangements of the soul ballad from the 60s "You Spin Me Round" by Dead Or Alive and "The Look Of Love" by ABC, through a stripped-down version of the famous hit "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol and a cabaret performance of the legendary song "Girls on Film" by Duran Duran, to tropical-reggae version of the title track that originally made The Clash famous.
Nouvelle Vague performed in Belgrade for the first time way back in 2006, precisely in Dom omladine, where on May 14 this year, as part of their European tour, they are promoting their current album.
We look forward to meeting old musical friends!
